- Do not smoke during pregnancy or enclosed places where the child sleeps.
- Maternal avoidance of highly allergenic foods during pregnancy and lactation to help in the primary prevention of allergy is NOT recommended.
- Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended for at least 4 months and up to 6 months of age.
- For infants at increased risk of allergic disease who cannot be exclusively breastfed for the first 4-6 months, a hydrolyzed formula may offer advantages to prevent atopic dermatitis.
- Complementary foods can be introduced between 4-6 months of age when an infant is developmentally able to sit with support and has neck control.
- Increasing evidence supports that early introduction of highly allergenic foods may decrease the risk of food allergy or eczema.
- Consultation with a Clinical Immunologist and Allergist is recommended for personalized plan as to the introduction of complementary foods especially in those with eczema or a previous history of food allergy.
